The author of 'Murder by the River' - Jerry Burden joined David and Clint in the studio to talk about a crime that became part of Chattanooga folklore and why he wanted to tell the story!
The bar scene in Chattanooga, Tn in the 1970s was really taking on a life of its own - thousands of young adults were celebrating life as one bar after the other popped up, however the world behind that bar scene was a pretty dangerous place to be. From firebombings to simple assaults and tax evasion to murder - the bright lights and the loud music covered up a seedy underground of crime, jealousy, and corruption. No story represents that more than the 1973 murder-for-hire killing of Roland Hargis outside of the Tiki Hut Bar! It took years for the police to put the puzzle together, but once they did it involved a few of their own, an ex-wife, 'friends', an assassin, false testimony, and...it opened the door for people to see what was really going on when the sun went down and bars opened up in Chattanooga. PLUS - it involved a famous house known for its swinging parties - the playboy mansion on the ridge!
